This is a back to basics look at what solid fuel is the best value for your open fire or multifuel stove.
Much like electricity and gas solid fuel can be measured in kWh (kilowatt-hour).
We sell three basic solid fuels here at Stretton House and they are Smokeless Fuel, Kiln Dried Birch Logs and Compressed Wood Lava Logs.
The kWh per kg of each fuel is only half the story as we also need to consider the cost per kg of each fuel.
Birch Logs typically contain 4.2kWh per kg, Lava Logs contain 5kWh per kg and Smokeless Fuel 8.9kWh per kg.
When we also consider the cost per kg of the fuel we can calculate the price per kWh of energy which is the most useful figure.
Birch Logs cost £0.19 per kWh of potential heat energy making them the most expensive
Lava Logs cost £0.13 per kWh of heat energy making them a budget choice for customers using woodburning stoves that cannot take advantage of Smokeless Fuel.
Smokeless Fuel is by far the most economical solid fuel we sell costing only £0.08 per kWh of potential heat energy. So for customers with open fires and multifuel stoves this is the best value option.
In conclusion if your appliance is able to burn them Smokeless Ovals are by far the most economical solid fuel option available.
